Yorkie

Yorkie Puppies Dog Breed Information

The Yorkshire Terrier, known as the “Yorkie,” originated in Yorkshire, UK, in the mid-1800s as skilled “ratters” to control rat populations. They later became fashionable lapdogs among Victorian nobles and arrived in the United States in the 1870s. Recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1885, they are now esteemed members of the Toy Group. Yorkies are cherished companions in the US, admired for their affectionate nature and adventurous spirit. Despite their small size, they remain popular for their determination and charm.

Yorkshire Terriers, or Yorkies, are small dogs known for their occasional diva-like behavior, especially without proper socialization or training. A well-trained Yorkie is affectionate, loyal, and playful, with a lively and sometimes mischievous personality. Despite their size, they may seek attention and end up in amusing situations.

When properly socialized, Yorkies generally get along well with children, other dogs, and pets, despite their Terrier background and prey drive. While they may chase, they can coexist peacefully if raised together. Yorkies make excellent watchdogs, quickly warming up to strangers but alerting with a loud bark. Early training is essential to manage barking tendencies and ensure they remain friendly and well-behaved.

Yorkies are incredibly adaptable dogs, thriving in both apartments and larger homes with fenced yards for exercise. They are sensitive to both heat and cold, often requiring winter gear during chilly walks to stay warm. Due to their strong familial bonds, Yorkies prefer not to be left alone for extended periods, as this may lead to separation anxiety if not addressed early on through proper training and attention.

The health of Yorkie puppies is significantly influenced by the health of their parents and responsible breeding practices. Common health issues in Yorkies include patellar luxation and eye anomalies. Reputable breeders prioritize screening their dogs to prevent passing on preventable health issues to puppies. When considering purchasing a Yorkshire Terrier puppy, inquire about the health and genetic history of both parents. Additionally, ask about any health tests or clearances conducted to ensure the puppies’ well-being.

Yorkies are intelligent and generally eager to please, although they can display stubbornness and employ their adorable faces to manipulate situations. Consistent, clear, and positive reinforcement-based training methods typically yield excellent results with Yorkies.

Given their small size and bladder capacity, Yorkies require frequent potty breaks, especially as puppies. House training may pose initial challenges, but with consistent efforts, utilizing house training tips, puppy pads as backups, and plenty of patience, successful housebreaking is achievable for both you and your Yorkie.

Maintaining a Yorkie’s coat, despite being low/non-shedding, requires regular attention. Daily brushing is essential for longer cuts to prevent tangles, and tying up untrimmed head hair is recommended. A shorter “puppy cut” reduces brushing needs. Weekly baths and grooming every 4-6 weeks are necessary, along with regular care for nails, ears, and teeth. Monthly nail trims, weekly ear checks, and dental care are crucial for the small breed’s overall health. Groomer assistance is valuable, but consistent at-home maintenance is vital for their well-being.

Yorkies typically exhibit moderate to low energy levels, though they may engage in bursts of high energy during playtime. Daily walks and some play suffice for their exercise needs, although they enjoy spending additional time with you if you’re up for it. It’s crucial to ensure they don’t overheat or overexert themselves while trying to keep pace with you. Monitoring their activity levels helps maintain their well-being and prevents overheating.

The Yorkies ranks among the smallest dog breeds, typically standing 7-9 inches tall and weighing between 4-7 pounds when fully grown.

On average, Yorkies have a lifespan of 11 to 15 years.
