Portuguese Water Dog Puppies Dog Breed Information

The Portuguese Water Dog is a lively and fun-loving working breed originally employed by Portuguese fishermen to retrieve lost equipment and herd fish into nets. Their affinity for water can be traced back to their history as valuable fishing companions earning them the nickname “Cao de Agua” meaning Dog of Water. With a curly coat and webbed feet these dogs are well-adapted to swimming reflecting their historical role as a “Fisherman’s Friend.”

The Portuguese Water Dog is known for its friendly and playful nature. When properly socialized from an early age they are good with children and strangers. They generally get along well with other dogs and display a friendly demeanor towards other family pets.

The Portuguese Water Dog is highly adaptable to various living environments. While they are not overly sensitive to hot or cold climates extreme temperatures should be avoided. They can thrive in apartment settings given they receive adequate exercise and attention. However, Portuguese Water Dogs do not enjoy prolonged periods of solitude and are happiest when spending time engaging with their family members.

The Portuguese Water Dog is typically a healthy breed overall. However, they may be prone to certain health issues including Juvenile Dilated Cardiomyopathy and Storage Disease which are genetically passed from parents to puppies. These conditions can be prevented through proper genetic testing. It’s important to discuss the genetic history of the parents with the breeder and inquire about relevant health clearances to ensure the health and well-being of the puppies.

Due to their high intelligence, Portuguese Water Dogs are suitable for owners of all experience levels. They quickly grasp simple commands and are generally easy to housebreak. Their intelligence also makes them adept at agility and other advanced tasks such as service dog work. Portuguese Water Dogs are known to meet and excel at practically any challenge presented to them.

The Portuguese Water Dog is a low-shedding breed that requires proper grooming for optimal health. Two popular grooming styles are the Lion Cut which involves shaving specific areas while leaving the rest of the coat full length and the Retriever Cut which trims the entire coat to a uniform 1″ length. Regular weekly brushing and occasional baths are necessary for coat maintenance. Additionally, monthly nail trimming, regular ear checks and gentle cleaning help prevent overgrowth, ear infections, and dental diseases. Dental care includes daily tooth brushing or using enzyme toothpaste.

The Portuguese Water Dog is known for its high energy levels and requires at least an hour of exercise daily. A fenced-in yard is advantageous for this breed as is an active family lifestyle. Given their love for water swimming is an excellent activity for Portuguese Water Dogs. They excel in various dog sports including dock diving, agility, obedience, rally, tracking, among others.

The Portuguese Water Dog is a medium-sized dog, typically weighing between 35 to 60 pounds and standing at a shoulder height of 17 to 23 inches when fully grown.

On average, the lifespan of a Portuguese Water Dog ranges from 10 to 14 years.
