Bichon Frise

Bichon Frise Puppies Dog Breed Information

The Bichon Frise is part of a group of ancient small white dog breeds called Barbichon. This group includes the Bichon Frise, Bolognese, Maltese, and Havanese.

Long ago, Spanish sailors had dogs like the Bichon Frise as companions on their ships and brought them to Tenerife, the biggest Canary Island, where they became known as the Bichon Tenerife. These dogs were also liked by rich people in Italy during the 14th century.

Surprisingly, it was the French who made the Bichon into the gentle lap dog we see today as the Bichon Frise. The American Kennel Club recognized the Bichon Frise in 1971, and it became an official breed in 1973 as part of the Non-Sporting Group.

The Bichon Frise is known for being a loving companion breed. They are affectionate, gentle, and playful, enjoying cuddles and playtime. They get along well with children and other pets, especially when they are socialized from a young age. While they can bark to alert you, they’re more interested in making friends and seeking attention than being guard dogs. Overall, they have happy and friendly personalities, making them great family pets.

The Bichon Frise is a dog that can fit into different living situations. They like having a yard to play in but can also be happy in apartments if they get enough attention and exercise. They’re okay with different weather but prefer not to be in extreme heat or cold for too long. Most importantly, they just want to be with their families and not be left alone too much.

It’s important to know that Bichon Frise dogs can have health issues like bladder infections, eye problems, and joint issues. But if breeders are careful, they can reduce these problems in puppies.

Good breeders check their dogs to make sure they don’t pass on health issues to puppies. So, when getting a Bichon Frise, ask about the health of both parents and any tests they’ve had. The National Breed Club recommends checking hips, eyes, and joints at least.

Bichon Frises can also get allergies, especially seasonal ones, but there are ways to help them feel better during allergy seasons.

The Bichon Frise is a great choice for new dog owners because they are eager to learn and perform tricks. They are generally easy to train, but it might take some time to learn where to go potty. It’s important to use positive reinforcement during training because they are sensitive dogs. Early socialization helps them become friendly and well-rounded pets. Taking them to puppy training classes can also be helpful for extra training and socialization.

The Bichon Frise is a fluffy dog with soft, curly fur that’s usually white, apricot, cream, or buff. It’s easy to take care of, but you should brush its coat every day to keep it looking nice and avoid tangles. Bathing and trimming once a month is necessary, which can be done at home or by a professional groomer.

Besides grooming, you’ll need to look after its nails, ears, and teeth. Check their eyes and ears every week and clean them gently when needed. Trim their nails every month or so and brush their teeth regularly.

It’s important to start grooming habits early with your puppy so they get used to them as they grow up. This will make caring for them easier in the long run.

The Bichon Frise is usually moderately active, but they have moments of sudden high energy. You might see them running around excitedly, but because they’re small, they get tired quickly.

Taking them for walks and playing with them every day is important. They also enjoy doing activities like agility or obedience training. Some Bichons even work as therapy dogs.

When they’re not being active, they like to nap or cuddle with you. But they don’t like being alone for too long and might get bored or anxious, which can lead to them doing things like whining, barking, or chewing. So, it’s good to keep them busy and spend time with them.

Adult Bichon Frises typically stand between 9 and 12 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 12 and 18 pounds.

On average, a Bichon Frise typically lives for about 14 to 15 years.
